A landmark agreement safeguarding the future of Thurston’s most cherished green spaces has been officially approved following the approval of a visionary planning application by Mid Suffolk District Council.

The decision unlocks a historic land swap agreement between Thurston Parish Council and local landowners, securing high-value community assets for generations to come in exchange for a modest total of 10 new homes—consisting of 3 dwellings off Norton Road and up to 7 on land west of Barrells Road. By securing this agreement, the community has successfully prevented the threat of large-scale commercial developments, such as the previously opposed 58-house proposal on Barrells Green.

A win for Thurston: major community gains secured

Under the newly finalised freehold transfers, the village of Thurston takes permanent ownership of:

The 10-acre New Green site: The entire parkland and the New Green Centre are now protected for the currentand future residents of the village, future-proofing the facilities for the local community.

• Brand new allotments: Dedicated, secure allotment plots will be created at Barrells Green, protecting local growers. Further land on the site will remain as natural habitat.
• Additional land: Greenspace on Norton Road will be left as natural habitat, supporting biodiversity and encouraging indigenous species.
